The Walkie-Talkie has finally grown up

I remember running around the house, hollering at my little brother through the microphone of a cheap plastic walkie-talkie. Those walkie-talkies never carried very far — just about as far as we could yell.

And, our most fun came with unscrewing them and tearing their innards apart.

As we grew older, we switched to CB radios, which gave us a range of about one fourth a mile.

Then came the first generation of high-frequency walkies that let us talk at ranges close to a mile apart.

The walkie talkie has finally grown up. Meet the Motorola MH230R.

Now, I know that there are higher quality FRS radios on the market. Some of them have more features. Some of them have more range. but I was impressed with how the MH230R combines functionality with reasonable price.

The Motorola MH230R boasts a 23-Mile Range. Now, we all know that these radio manufacturers must be testing their radios somewhere out in deep space, because I have never gotten range that comes close to matching what these guys advertise.

However this radio set consistently gets good reviews of being able to transmit 2 to 3 miles across rugged terrain. Thanks to their high frequency, they also get good reviews for in city usage.

The Motorola MH230R comes with 22 channels. That’s more than enough to keep your girlfriend from listening in. seriously speaking though, this gives you enough channels to enable plenty of conversations, no matter how many people you have carrying thse.

These radios are great for outdoorsmen as they are carry all 7 NOAA channels. They also offer voice activated hands-free usage, allowing them to be used without the aid of a push to talk headset.

And, while you probably want to save its AAA batteries for its 8 hours of talk-time, it does have a small LED light for giving you emergency lighting when you need it.

For the outdoorsmen — or a walkie-talkie loving kid — this is a great device to have and is certain to brighten any one’s Christmas morning.

Whoa! I can’t believe it. AM/FM pocket radios still exist!

Not only do they exist, but these Sony pocket radios are one of the most-purchased items at Amazon.com

Now, before you go thinking this dude should go back to giving out white socks for Christmas, let me explain:

Too often we get so caught up in giving the latest, greatest gifts. We spend thousands on iPods, and iPads and iPhones (well, if we are poor, MP3 players and laptops, and smart phones) that we stacked underneath the tree each year.

However, we forget that these gifts are neither appropriate or wanted by certain members of our family. (I mean, grandma really wants an iPad?)

And, likely you have a whole list of younger individuals on your list will are not yet old enough to appreciate — or handle — these expensive electronics. So, we put them off for another year.

But, the wonder of picking up a voice from a faraway place — even if that is only downtown — with your very own personal radio, still has not lost its wonder. (Although, this pocket radio has been reported to receive stations from over 100 miles away!)

So, I’m just saying this is not one that should be crossed off the wish list yet.

I think the Nerf toys need to top every Christmas gift idea list. When it comes to knowing what boys want, Nerf has a corner on the market. (and they built a fort on it)

I was just reviewing the Nerf Vortex Vigilon. I have to say, I love the Vortex XLD discs. They fly soo far, they have a decent degree of accuracy to them, and they freak out the competition.

Seriously. There’s something about having that spinning green disc coming at ya’ that is just terrifying.

The Vortex Nitron is the full-sized big brother of the Vigilon. I have to say that I am pretty impressed. First of all, its long stock gives you a high degree of control. Plus, the short barrel still leaves the gun compact enough to handle high-action chase scenes.

The Nitron has a long clip (20 discs!!) that you can preload (and carry back ups!) to allow for fast reloading during matches.

The battery-powered shooting action is a tad noisy, but I think the fast-shooting action is worth the tradeoff. It also has an acceleration trigger to help you power up for longer distanced attacks.

Some people actually feel that the pump-action Praxis is better since it is quieter and has a longer range. But let’s face it, none of these guns are that accurate over a certain distance. Give me the gun that will let me throw a hailing of green discs at my terrified opponent.

The full-auto action of the Nerf Nitron does just that.

Being the largest of the Nerf Vortex line, the Nitron comes with all of the bells and whistles. I mean, this even has a scope to help with your long-range accuracy. The tactical rail system lets you upgrade it with additional accessories to suit your playing style.

The Nerf Nitron is going to be about twice the price as the baby of the family, the Vigilon. However, for Nerf fans, its worth the extra.

As an extension of the Vortex line it also uses the super popular far-flying Vortex XLD discs. These discs have a solid core to give it enough mass for a long flight, and a fun, bouncy edge to make sure they don’t damage anything.

The Nerf Vigilon carries 5 rounds and is a short, light weight gun perfect for intense matches against its larger cousins such as the Praxis and the Nitron blasters.

The Vigilon is built for fast shooting and gives you an edge over pump-action weapons such as the Praxis. The short, pistol-like barrel allows for quick aiming. It also is quite accurate and can handle distances up to 50 feet.

The built-in clip allows for super fast reloading in the heat of the game.  Just stack the discs in the palm of your hand and slap them back in with one swift motion. Have back-up discs along as you will find that they tend to roll away and bounce off objects into random trajectories

The gun is well-balanced for realistic handling. It also is well-built with a highly reliable and realistic cocking and shooting action. On the rare occasion that a disc does jam, it has a lever to easily release the disc and let you get back to firing.
